The image of Mother Mary has been present in my life since I can remember. My Abuelita Andrea is faithfully devoted to her prayer and always thought me to ask for her protection. In the month of May she is celebrated with prayers of devotion, offerings and processions. Through the Caribbean and Latin America she has the status of "patron saint" and has many renditions from "La Guadalupe", "La Providencia", "La Milagrosa" and "La Caridad el Cobre" to name a few. Even though I do not practice Catholicism as a religion I do maintain my grandmother's teachings of Mother Mary's compassion and grace as a compass in my life path.
Our Lady Guadalupe is one of my favorite images of the Mary. Her radian halo and cloak of starts remind me of a cosmical motherly love beyond any dogma and physical form. I've learned from my Mexica relatives to also call her "Tonantzin" (Nahuatl for "Beloved Mother") in recognition of our ultimate mother, our planet Earth.
